Since 1996, the National Institute has been the Coordinating Scientific Center for Turkmenistan of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Currently, climate change, ecological problems of the Aral Sea, land degradation and desertification in Central Asia are developing the scientific basis for solving the tasks arising from the Convention. In addition, research activities aimed at solving the tasks arising from the National Aral Plan of Turkmenistan for 2021-2025 and the National Forest Program of Turkmenistan (2021-2025) approved by the President of Turkmenistan on October 22, 2021 are being conducted. is underway.
In accordance with the 2021-2025 Research Plan approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, it carries out work on 7 topics:
1. To study biodiversity in the region of "Altyn Asyr" Turkmen Lake and to prepare proposals for their conservation.
2. Ecological monitoring of saline areas in the region of "Altyn Asyr" Turkmen Lake and development of phytoremediation technology for their restoration.
3. Ecological monitoring of vegetation cover of Caspian deserts and its economic importance.
4. Studying the current ecological status of the Central Karakum's woody and woody plants under changing climate conditions.
5. Studying the bioecological characteristics of the wild fruit plants of South-West Kopetdag and ways of their restoration.
6. Studying the impact of agricultural structures on desert ecosystems and developing nature protection measures (in the example of the southern part of the Central Karagum).
7. To study the effect of forest zones around Ashgabat city on soil and weather conditions (in the example of Central Kopetdag foothills).
A number of manuals, scientific articles and proposals for introduction into production have been prepared based on the results of the above-mentioned research activities.
Scientists of the National Institute are preparing the planned version of the National Plan to combat desertification in Turkmenistan until 2025.
According to the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna, projects are being implemented together with the scientific centers of several foreign countries and major international organizations. Among them, the All-Russian Research Institute of Hydrotechnics and Reclamation named after Kostyakov and the regional project of the World Bank in Central Asia carry out joint scientific cooperation.
The main goal of the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna is to carry out fundamental and practical research activities on the protection of biological diversity and the environment of the country, and the systematic use of natural resources. The main functions of the institute are:
1) development of methods of restoration and efficient use of forests and pastures, protection of plants and animals;
2) development of environmental and desertification control measures and desertification control measures;
3) studying the effects of climate change on the environment, flora and fauna;
4) to analyze the achievements of Turkmenistan and foreign countries in the field of nature protection, to prepare proposals and proposals for their use and introduction into production;
5) to strengthen mutual cooperation on the implementation of integrated scientific programs together with the relevant ministries and departments of the country, research institutes;
6) to attract foreign investments in order to implement large-scale scientific projects and programs.
