DEVELOPMENT OF THE GARAGUM DESERT

48
During the  period  of the  Revival of the New Era of  the Powerful State, such priority tasks as environment protection, careful and rational use of its resources, and
fostering love for the Motherland in young people find a positive solution. Today, the environmental policy pursued by the President of Turkmenistan, Hero Serdar
Berdimuhamedov, is being implemented, our country has become a prosperous state, and the Turkmen people live a happy life. This is fully evidenced by the work carried out in the country to implement the tasks arising from the United Nations (UN) Convention to Combat Desertification.
As is known, desertification is understood as land degradation in arid, less humid regions formed due to climate change and a number of other reasons. As
a result of land desertification, vegetation is damaged, plants lose their ability to reproduce themselves. The need for a careful and rational attitude to nature was understood in ancient times. Our Esteemed Hero-Arkadag emphasizes that the ancestors of the Turkmen people fought against desertification of lands and carried
out important work to live in harmony with nature: "Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, who have been constantly improving agricultural technologies since ancient times, made many efforts to improve the arid climate of the country, turning our generous pastures into green meadows. This is evidenced by wells, karizes, reservoirs, canals, rivers, lakes, and other water management structures created in abundance in the Turkmen steppes, sands, and foothills".
Thanks to the efforts of Hero -Arkadag and Arkadagly Hero Serdar, the Garagum Desert is being transformed. Occupying a total area of 350 000 square kilometers, the desert is a storehouse of countless natural treasures. The Altyn Asyr Turkmen Lake, built in the heart of the desert, is a pride of our people. The construction of the artificial lake with a length of more than 2600 kilometers of channels and a total volume of 132 cubic kilometers made it possible to create 1 300 000 hectares in various parts of the Garagum Desert for growing and breeding various species of animals. This is a successful implementation of one of the measures related to reducing environmental risks arising from environmental conventions adopted by the United Nations. The project is of great importance not only for our country, but also for the entire Central Asian region.
In the  Garagum Desert, you can find 293  species of plants. According to scientists, 210 species of plants have
medicinal properties. In his multi-volume scientific work  "Medicinal Plants of Turkmenistan», Hero-Arkadag describes in detail the characteristic features of each of these plants, reveals their medicinal value in the treatment of various diseases, and also indicates the places where plants grow in our nature. Currently, a number of  factories and enterprises have been built in the country for the production of medicines based on the use of medicinal herbs growing in Turkmenistan. Our Scientist Arkadag emphasizes the great potential and importance of new industries in these areas.
The rapid development of the Garagum Desert has opened up enormous opportunities for introducing non-traditional and renewable energy sources into the national energy system. According to scientists, by 2050, about 50% of the energy produced in the world will be generated using renewable energy sources, and solar and wind energy accounting for about 34%.
The State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan and its  Research and Production  Centre  "Renewable Energy Sources" are working hard to implement the Concept for the Development of the Altyn Asyr Turkmen Lake Region for 2019–2025. Combined solar and wind power plant with a capacity of 10 MW has been commissioned on the Altyn Asyr Turkmen Lake side, and energy specialists are monitoring its operation and showing positive results.
Water shortage in Central Asia will become a global problem in the 21st century. This was clearly demonstrated by the One Water Summit held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on December 3, 2024. Our Hero-Arkadag also took part in the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16) and made a report on the work
done in Turkmenistan in this direction, confirming that all state activities are aimed at ensuring the environmental well-being of the country.
