The first meteorological observatories in Turkmenistan were established in the present city of Turkmenbashi (in the city of Krasnovodsk) in 1869. In the 1920s, along with the recovery of the national economy, meteorological stations began to operate in Yerbent and Garabogaz Bay. In 1924, a total of 19 weather stations and 10 observation points were operating in our region. In 1926, the establishment of the Hydrometeorological Department in Turkmenistan attempts to solve more important questions of the country's meteorological and hydrological study. In the 1930s, a total of 28 meteorological stations were opened, including meteorological stations in Darveze and Chagyl villages, and monitoring activities were established. Employees of the Meteorological Service continued to monitor the weather even during the Great Patriotic War.

In August 1941, the Burdalyk meteorological station was established along the Amyderya River, in 1942, the Dansher-Kala meteorological station was established near the Amyderya River, and in 1944, the Bokurdak meteorological station was established in Central Karagum. Thus, the 1930s-1950s are the years of strong growth in the creation of new meteorological stations. Currently, Turkmenistan has a total of 4 provincial hydrometeorological centers, along with more than 100 hydrometeorological stations and observation points. At these stations, hardworking meteorologists monitor weather events day and night, regardless of whether it's hot in summer or bitterly cold in winter. The Civil Aviation Meteorology Center of Turkmenistan and regional civil aviation meteorology stations of Turkmenhydromet conduct appropriate activities to ensure the safety of aircraft at the airports of the country around the clock. Turkmengidromet is not limited to making weather forecasts and delivering them to the public.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was established on March 23, 1950. On January 3, 1993, our independent state of Turkmenistan became a member of this organization.
March 23 - World Meteorological Day is celebrated as a professional holiday by hydrometeorological workers. Based on the President's decision on January 29, 2019, with the aim of fully reforming and developing the agricultural system of the country, the structure of the Committee on Hydrometeorology under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan was changed and submitted to the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. Specialists of the service study the weather conditions of our country, prepare data such as its impact on agricultural crops, grass growth in pastures, warn about dangerous weather events in advance, and do great work in preventing future damage. They also monitor the water level of large and small rivers in our country and make estimates about their volume.
